Today should be designated “Slide Guitarist Day.” The greatest slide guitarist of all time, Duane Allman, was born on this date in 1946. There have never been tastier slide solos and fills than Duane’s on Statesboro Blues, One Way Out, You Don’t Love Me, and Layla. Man among boys until his untimely death.
One year after Duane was born, on November 21, 1947, Joe Walsh was born. Over time I’ve become less of a Joe Walsh fan but his early slide work on James Gang Rides Again, especially on The Bomber and on Rocky Mountain Way, was as good as anyone’s in the early ‘70s, this side of Duane. So, Hallmark, time to get some cylinder shaped cards out for Slide Guitarist Day.
